When news of the impending COVID-19 pandemic hit the United States, consumers across the country flocked to convenience stores and supermarkets to buy hand sanitizer. Within less than a week, hand sanitizer was one of the most scarce yet highly sought after products in the country.

With more and more families and businesses looking to protect themselves from the COVID-19 virus, vital resources like hand sanitizer became increasingly scarce. Companies around the world joined in the race to produce sanitizer quickly to stave off the widespread need. Even alcohol distilleries modified their production lines to manufacture high-alcohol content sanitizers for quick distribution.

However, this great hand sanitizer race may have been a race to the bottom for many consumers. Starting in June, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) began warning consumers about hand sanitizers containing menthol, which can be harmful when applied topically and deadly if ingested. Since they first sounded the alarm, the FDA list of recalled hand sanitizers has recently grown to include over 100 different brands. To see if your favorite hand sanitizer is on this list, click the link below for the official FDA website. There you will find a tool where you can search by brand for the latest recalled hand sanitizers:

Not only do a lot of these brands contain menthol, or wood alcohol, but many sanitizer formulas have been found to also contain 1-propanol. Even more troubling, many of the offending products do not list 1-propanol, but instead list ethanol or isopropyl alcohol in its place. The FDA warns that 1-propanol “can be life threatening when ingested.”
